Hi there, I am not exactly a domestic goddess but really want to have a go at making an apple pie some recipes say I need baking beads I don't have any of those however my son has lots of marbles, do you think I can use those instead, sorry if this sounds like a stupid question as I say I am no Nigella !
    thanks lyns

Don't see why not ;) Put a sheet of greaseproof into the pastry before adding the "beans" or they may stick :D I'll add this to the existing thread on alternatives to baking beans later.

Heres a thread about them . Seems you can use many different grains and pasta etc

I have a tub of red lentils that I started using years ago and keep re-using - I just wouldn't recommend trying to eat them now

My grandma had a jar of dried peas she kept for this purpose...
I wouldn't use marbles TBH because they are so big. I use ceramic baking beans and just reuse them.

After I'd forked out for baking beads from Lakeland I read a tip about using a (clean!) dog lead - metal so conducts the heat well and super easy and quick to coil up. Not having a dog I don't know how a new lead compares to the beans price wise, but if I hadn't already ordered something for blind baking I would have looked into it.

Can't remember for the life of me where I read the tip though.
