I wouldn't have though that would be a good idea, they're glass and they might shatter with the heat, best to use dried beans (kidney, borlotti)... or make a pie with only a top crust?

aka "Baking Beans". I guess you might be able to use glass marbles, providing they're clean.

TBH, I've never baked the base of an apple pie blind; I just fill then bake - a higher heat to begin with to brown the top, then lower to cook the filling. I'd probably bake a case blind if I was planning on using it for a lemon/lime meringue pie or a quiche.

I made a quiche at the weekend and didn't want to buy baking beans as don't think ii'll use them.

As the base started to cook I could see it bubbling (panic!) so ended up using coins (lined the base with greaseproof paper) to weigh it down and it worked really well.

    Not sure about marbles though.

but if you do use beans or rice or whatever be sure to line the pastry case well - foil or greaseproof. I can remember not realising you had to do that and laboriously picking grains of rice out of my pastry, durrrr ! Coins seems like a fantastic idea - nice and heavy (ah but the old pennies would have been even better !) and free. Sounds good to me !

    Hi,
I have never done this, but my mum used to bake loads pies, cakes flans etc etc as they were 9 of us to cook for and she always used the crust's out of a loaf of bread, just lay it on top of the pastry case and hey presto!
Didnt do us any harm lol

I use coins - great because they transmit the heat so the pastry is good and crisp, before I that I used rice
