Hi, I'm afraid I can't help you with decorating tips as I'm a real novice myself :D but for helping you to choose colour schemes you could try the dulux.co.uk site where you can 'paint a virtual room' by choosing a room closest to yours in shape etc and then using various colour schemes to see what looks good to you.

Is it best to paint directly onto wall or would you recommend lining paper first then paint on top of that?

If you're doing interior woodwork white, consider choosing a satin finish, rather than gloss.

Also forget the Dulux & other OIL based satin finish paints, but go for WATER based instead. It'll stay white (not go yellow) & is easier to clean your brushes & splaxhes.

You'll need to undercoat (maybe 2 or 3 coats)with water based primer/undercoat first. I used the B&Q own brand with excellent results (3 or 4 coats)on mostly new wood in our new place.

Avoid pone coat products, if you want a good, or even a reasonable finish, if you've anything less than a really well prepared starting point.

You dont use gloss on a cornice, you would normally paint that in with either your ceiling white emulsion, or the emulsion colour of the wall, or even a different colour, but always use emulsion.

If your woodwork is very dirty and old age looking, then I would advise going for an undercoat, maybe 2U/C if they need it, then finish with your top coat in gloss.

Personally, even if the woodwork werent that bad, I would still undercoat first, then top coat, but then I am a very fussy old gal.:D
