Forged 50Euro from Thomas Cook

Options
Hi ( I have posted this earlier but think I put it in the qrong place - apologies for duplication)

I need some advice - my hubby went to Thomas Cook in February to exchange some sterling to Euros ahead of a boys week away  (lucky devil) - the transaction was complete - no problems - or so he thought.

Off he goes to Rome, money in pocket; all is well until he tries to spend one of the 50 euro notes - he is advised (in broken english) it is a forgery. He travels (at further expense) to a branch of the bank of Italy where he beleives they will change his note (someone said it simply looked like it had gone through a washing machine). Sadly the bank kept the money and gave him a sheet of paper telling him they have kept it!

On returning home he contacts Thomas cook to tell them what's happened and provide copy documents, receipt etc - they have today written back to say, words to the effect of, they cannot help further as they have not been officially advised that there are forged euros in circulation!

Now we can't afford to simply 'write off' this money, but really don't know where else we can go - does anyone have any ideas/tips/advice?

Thanks

Nothing you can do. There is no way you can prove where that note came from. Just like shops are obliged to check for forgeries when money is handed over, so are you obliged to check yourself when receiving money.

The only way that it could be proven is if serial numbers were noted during the transaction.
