Acronis or Ghost

Which one is better between this 2 imaging programs. I think I prefer to image my laptop than doing a backup. I got the acronis and couldnt work out how to photocopy my entire laptop onto an external hd.
I now want to try ghost, has anybody used before?

It depends on which version of Acronis you're using. Some of their give away versions have the clone function removed.
However the 15 day trial version of True Image Home has the Disk Clone Wizard included so you can clone your entire set up to an external HDD.
    Acronis True Image Home.

I did this a couple of weeks ago replacing the HDD on my laptop and it was surprisingly easy.

What can't you work out? You just need to run the backup wizard, and save the image on the usb drive

Not sure what you mean? The acronis create backup task creates an image file.

I tried to do it last night, plugged WD HD and I got to a point where it says you can't copy into same disk or something and I changed it to F: and it says the drive doesnt exist.

Do I need to install something on the external drive first?

f: is a formatted external usb drive, which you can write files to in windows?

Did you do a clone or a backup? Should be backup disc 1/c: to f:

Clonezilla is good, though the user interface takes a bit of getting used to.

You also need to be a bit careful if any of your partitions are XFS format, as there is a bug in the underlying Partimage utility which can cause XFS partitions to be ignored (i.e. not backed up when they are supposed to be).

I prefer True Image to Ghost because it will clone each partition automatically, when I tried Ghost it seemed you had to copy each partition one at a time.
Either should do the job, it's just a matter of which you get used to.
PS: your external HD has to be recognised in My Computer first before you can image to it. If not, True Image can't see a drive to copy to (it must be a separate drive to your primary drive). Once that's done, note the drive letter. and tell it to image to that disk.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
