Cavity Wall Insulation again!

Sorry this is a bit long-winded, but i just wanted to have a bit of a moan...
The company who came to install my cavity wall insulation today, have just left without doing the job!
I applied for this though the Tesco offer of £198, and had a suvey done a couple of weeks ago, I was not advised of any problems. The chap did ask if the neighbours would allow the installers to put their ladders on their land, and also would they be able to walk on part of the property that has a flat roof, with boards? I told him yes, no problem at all to the neighbours and the roof.
Well, today the installers arrived, firstly they wanted to look at the fire, we have an open coal fire in the living room, they said they would need to put a vent in the front outside wall. They then looked at the boiler, and made no comment. They went outside and looked around, when they came back in they said they couldn't do one wall because they were unable to get onto the garage roof and the garage was 'full of stuff'. At no point were we asked to make space in the garage, we have just sold our holiday home so the contents are currently in the garage, just as they were when the surveyor came! I suggested that the insulation might not be very effective if only three walls of the house were insulated, they said it would be OK!
They did say we could get scaffolding erected to enable them to get on the garage roof, but we would have to arrange it, and pay for it, as their company woudn't, again this was not mentioned at any point during the survey.
Then to the kitchen, where we have a duel fuel (calor gas and electric) Rangemaster cooker, they said they needed to put a vent in the kitchen. They said the only place they could put it was above the sink and worktop directly into my lovely tiles. I told them I didn't want them to do that.
So they said they couldn't do the job and left!
I had the distinct feeling that they really didn't want to do the job anyway, so probably I am better off having no job done, rather than a job done badly. What do you think?

Sounds as if your suspicions are right and they did not want the hassle of your particular job. I'm not sure of the logic of what they said about the vents. Surely, if you have the heating that you describe, it would already have whatever ventilation is required to operate safely and effectively. Perhaps you should start again with some other scheme.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Oh no. I am worried now. Dyson insulations are coming to (pardon the phrase) "fill my cavities" on friday!
The surveyor seemed fine when he came to look at the job but then so did yours!
They have asked the same questions as they asked you. i.e. can they put their ladders in neighbours back garden etc. We agreed to all of this. They did ask if they could lean out of our bedroom window above the conservatory to do those bits.
They have mentioned we may need a vent into the living room as we have a coal/gas fire. But the surveyor could not read the rating plate. (apparently it wont need one if the output is under 7kw?) He said the installer would have a book with them all in?
Well anyway i will keep you posted as to how it goes on friday. Just for refrence i am in the North east and am only paying £99 for the work to be done. Bargain i think! (if it all turns out ok!)0 -
