My laptop keeps switching off randomly, as if it is overheating. I'm more of a PC person so I'm a bit bewildered about where to even begin to look. Does anyone have any ideas?

have you noticed the fans running?
are the vents clear?0 -
What's the pattern of events? Does it run for say 30 mins then shut down? Is it worse when it's warmer?
Worth cleaning out the vents with a can of compressed air. Could be overheating but not the only possibility. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Try adjusting the power saving settings in Windows (assuming your running windows that is), I dropped my laptop about a year ago and now it will only run in power saver mode - i suspect I might have broken fan or something inside so when I run it now at full pelt it thinks its going into meltdown and switches off0

It is worse when it has been on for a while and will keep switching off.
It is always plugged in so we always have it in high performance mode. I have put it on power saver mode to see it that helps.
I will buy some compressed air.0 -

had that problem as well, had my laptop for nearly 5 years was still a beast of a machine cost me £800 when i got it, first the charger connection went then whenever u touched the battery or it got the slightest of knocks it shut down and took ages to turnback on, got a new charger and took the battery out it worked a charm, but in the end i just bought brand new laptop

You can download a CPU temp monitor to see if its a tempature problem
I had one that kept shutting down and it was when the temp reached 85'c.
I opened it up removed the cat hair and dust from the fan and it worked fine!
well until the charging socket broke off the motherboard and thats another story.0 -
is it a HP? If so, do a search on Google for faulty HP laptops and see if you are having the same probs with NVIDIA graphics as other users0
