Cheap train to Gatwick Airport April

Hi does anyone know how to travel cheaply to Gatwick airport from Harpenden? We need to be there about 7am on Friday April 4th returning about 10pm Friday May 1st and it seems really expensive at £30 each on the train! We’re travelling in the early hours so I thought it’d be cheap, but it seems to be more expensive!

It used to be that the stopping trains (i.e. the ones that went via East Croydon) were cheaper than the Gatwick Express but to get there for 7am you might have to use the Express.
This says expired but if you click on link, it still seems to be active -
(Have sent link by PM as I think there is a rule about not posting vouchers here.)
It says ANY train ticket so am assuming it's not just GWR ones.
You might be in luck.
Also, I think there is a National Express coach service through the night but you would need to get night bus to Victoria - I have no idea how easy that would be from Harpenden.0 -
Do you mean Friday 3rd April or Saturday 4th April? You can book a ticket via Holiday Extras for two adults and two children for a total of £54 return.0

How many of you are there? Groups of up to 4 can travel for £60 total, return, on FCC trains. Kids are £2 each. Only from ticket offices I believe, not online. http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/Main.php?iCmsPageId=148
Not sure that Gatwick Express is the slightest use to you - by the time you've changed and crossed London to get it you will be most of the way to Gatwick on FCC.0
