£30 suits at Asda/Tesco

Has anyone seen the £30 suits that Asda and Tesco's are doing? I desperately need a new suit for a wedding in 2 weeks and I was considering one of these. There has been quite a bit of coverage about these suits in the papers and it seems that for the price, they aren't too bad. Has anyone had a look at these in the store? Do they look okay?

There was a man buying one last week, plain black for a funeral, looked perfectly alright to me. I know they have had loads of jackets for sale, they looked fine, but not in the sizes that my DH or DS would fit.

Thanks Shez, the biggest pain for me is getting to the stores. I live in central London and all with both Asda and Tesco's, the nearst stores that do clothes are about 3-4 miles away and not very easy to get too. All the Tesco stores near me or near work are either Metro stores or just not big enough to carry clothes. Doing a bit of research, I see that Primark do a pin stripe suit for £35 so I might investiagate that, as there is a Primark store about 10 mins walk from where I live.

Yeah, I read they do one for £40, again the problem is getting to one of the store. They have a tendancy to be in out of town sort of places that aren't so easy to get to if you don't drive and have to rely on public transport. .. opps, stop the press, I just went to the website and found out they've opened one near by and its in walk distance too!! :j I shall have a look next weekend!. thanks!
  • Depends whether you're bothered that they're 100% polyester or not really. If not, they seem OK (although the trousers I tried on a couple of weeks ago had a tendancy to bunch and feel a little clingy).

How about M&S? They do a 'value' suit there for £79. Again, they're 3/4 polyester though. Personally (mainly because I regularly have to wear a suit I guess) I tend to avoid polyester. For suits I prefer a wool mix, much more comfortable IMHO.

I did consider M&S, but I want something cheap and it'll literally for the wedding and I'll use the trousers for work for a few weeks (if there not too hideous). I need to lose about 2 stone in weight before the summer, so I really don't want to waste good money on a suit that won't fit me in 2 months.
  • DH bought some £7 trousers from matalan and doesn't rate them at all for regular wear. They started to bobble very quickly and polyester really isn't a nice fabric to wear all day.
For a one off, or minimal wear they're probably value for money, but if you need something long term, spend out.

Why don't you just hire 1 - I did for a wedding last year - took 10 min to measure - try on - agree - complete paperwork ... and I picked it up on the way to the wedding and returned it on the way home ... nice, comfortable, easy to wear and most important they make sure you get what you need - fit wise - if you are a bit of a funny shape!!

http://www.mossbros.co.uk/hire/downloads/priceList_eveningwear06.pdf ...scroll down to day wear.

Better than being lumbered with a scratchy ,itchy, polyester effort that clings in the wrong places and looks like you slept in it after an hour.

I live near all four stores stores (Asda, Tesco, Primark and Matalan). Given the choice I would go for a suit from Asda as opposed to the rest, I would also avoid a black suit from either of the stores. It's just my opinion, but I find that the fabric in a black suit has to be quite a good quality otherwise it looks cheap.

I say go for an Asda suit because at our store they have a far wider range of colours and fabric compared to all of the above barring Matalan. I find that Matalan, apart from costing slightly more, the suits tend to cater for an older gent. Asda seem to have good balance between style, value and quality.

It's been a while since looking at the Tesco suits, but that last ones I saw about 6 months ago weren't bad, but they lacked choice. I guess alot of it depends on the size of your nearest store.

Hope you find something you like...

  • LXDirect has cheap suits, something like £35 each? And you can probably find a code to use on the codes board too!
