Sky tv n telephone line

I have signed up to sky tv and am just trying to get my head round what we need. It says it needs to link up to the telephone line but it says the installers will only run a cable around the skirts. Our telephone poin is in the hall and our tv is in the opposite side of the living room. If we don't want cable running around the cable do I need to get someone in to fit another telephone point nearer to the television before the sky installers come?
thanks

I'm not entirely sure, but I think even if you get someone else in to do it, all they will do is provide an extension cable with a box on the end so either way you'd have the cable running somewhere.
Could you hide it under a carpet?"a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessaries and conveniences of life than it is possible for any savage to acquire."0 -
You can opt out of having the phone connection if you pay another £20 odd on the initial fee. Which is probably less than it will cost to have a extension socket fitted.
Why not just run a temporary trailing socket yourself on the day?-that will satisfy the installer. Whether you leave it in place after that is entirely up to you (though contractually you are required to have it connected to the Sky box for the first 12 months of contract). No free lunch, and no free laptop

We are due to have sky fitted in a couple of weeks, from what I understood we are getting a new line put in.........check with sky themselves. Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0

Just bung the installer a fiver to just put a temporary in running across the room and when he is gone unplug it.
The cost of the phoneline is paid by QVC and the like, to get you into buying off the telly, sky very rarely check the phoneline and when they do, if ever, its to make sure you havnt moved it to a pub down the road, so the pub cant get sky sports for free!!!!:j Arsenal fru & fru :j0 -

That's if you don't already have a BT line and Sky are installing it as part of the Sky TV and phone package. The OP has an existing BT line.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for all of yor replies - macman - do i need to tell them beforehand that i want to pay the extra 20 quid or just when they turn up on the day? I did ring sky to ask them but the operator wasn't much help at all and jsut kept saying yes you need a telephone line. So I don't actually need the phone line to get the tv?

Yes, phone sky and tell them.
They charge £25 and they call it 'manual activation'.
I might be wrong but if you dont have manual activation sky do contact you as the box has failed to send data back to them. It used to be a condition for getting a free box.
My manually activated sky+ tries to phone out occasionally but sky are fine about it as I paid the fee.0 -
maplin do a telephone extender via electricity (its an adaptor that you plug in the telephone lead into, and at the other end plug the sky into the other adaptor into the plug)

I have only ever connected my phone line when had a new box fitted and don't keep it connected.
AFAIK Sky aren't bothered unless it is a multiroom box. Perhpas someone can clarify if anyone has had a problem with a standalone box not being connected?0 -

AFAIK sky are not bothered about keeping the phone line connected after the initial installation for a single box.
They are majorly bothered for multi room, they will insist the phone line is connected to both boxes.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
