Possessed Mouse - any advice?

Hi all,

My laptop was bought new in October, and for the last month the mouse has been acting strangely ( yes I know that sounds odd).

It won't scroll down as it used to, and it is nearly impossible to scroll up (the screen keeps jumping down again). When you try and grab the screen scroll bar, it sticks in one place and won't let you go up or down without trying about 3 or 4 times. It's like it has a life of it's own...:p

Everything I do is slowed down about 10x because of this, and it is getting really frustrating. I have AVG free anti virus, and it says everything is working properly. Is this a known bug / virus? Does anyone know a fix?

Thanks for reading.

    hi

What sort of mouse is it? it sounds like more of a mechanical problem than a software one.

What happens if you disconnect the mouse and use the touchpad? If it's the same problem, then the mouse is not faulty.
If the problem goes, then the mouse is faulty. If bought in October, it is still under warranty.

Thanks for all the replies. I've borrowed another mouse, and the problem seems to have gone away, so obviously my old one is past its useful life.

Without a mouse using the touchpad everything is fine.

    It's a big relief that it's not a virus - thanks :)

Clean the mouse-if it's an optical one, clean the sensor (where the red light shines out). If it's an old-fashioned ball type, remove the rubber ball, and clean it and the 3 scroll wheels inside. Best done with a cotton bud or two. Usually does the trick.
