Ey up gang :D I've not been round much recently, as what little spare time I've had I've been working on improving my bb speeds....and had some success :j

Internal wiring and the like has netted me an extra Mb on line sync speeds (now up to 4128 kb/s from 3095), with all main speedtesters showing 3.3-3.4Mb/s bandwidth....so far so good...

However, tiscali are unwiling to drop my target SNR margin to a 9dB profile (looks like I'm on 12dB at present, with a stable 10.7-12.5dB being achieved). A drop to 9dB should take my sync to closer to the 4.7Mb that they recon is my line's max (downstream stats are 49dB and 11.5dB power o/p)...

Sooo.....any ideas for the next step

I would have thought 6db would be a better target.
Is there any reason why it is currently 12db? Have you a history of an unstable line?

quick edit - many routers can have their snr 'tweaked' using wither custom firmware (I use dgteam's on a netgear 834gt) or via dmt tool - so you could (if you have a suitable modem) drop the target yourself.

hanx dbe...unfortunately the DMT tool doesn't work with my D-Link router or I would have used the bl00dy thing  - the peeps over on DSLZone swear by it if you have a compatable router.

I have a very stable connection, it's only ever dropped sync when the exchange was down. Was asking for a 9dB profile as didn't want to try and push it too low too quick - tiscali's DSLAMs don't auto-adjust, so each time it has to be changed, it's a call to India...but so far they're refusing to even try to lower it, claiming that I've got a crap line (okay, it's not the best and around 1700m from the exchange) and that what I'm achieving is perfectly fine so No, we won't alter your profile :(

I'm wondering if it's more to do with the low downstream power that they can't/won't increase..if so, I'm probably burgered

I used to have a d-link...years ago...I'm pretty sure I had custom firmware for it, though I can't remember if target snr was tweakable.
plan b (or A) just buy another router...the 834gt that I use is only about a tenner on ebay (sky branded) ;)

I have a spare (tiscali-branded siemens Gigabyte), but that always syncs lower than my D-Link....may have to investigate if it's tweakable.......
