Wireless Network Question

Hi, i recieved my wireless ADSL router and have managed to install it and get the internet working. The router is connected to my PC via Ethernet, and to my laptop through wireless.

My questions are,

Do i need to setup my own IP address for my PC and Laptop? As just now they are automatically assigned.

Also my printer is installed on my PC, is it possible to print on that printer from my Laptop using the wireless network?
If so, how do you do that? Does my PC need to be on if i want to print things out from my laptop?

Another question i have is can i play multiplayer/network games between my PC and Laptop? Or does this router i have just let me share the internet connection only?

If i want to use Bittorrent or Azureus do i have to do all that port forwarding stuff?

Thanks

    1) IP setup is fine left on automatic
    2) On your PC> right click the printer> sharing and turn on file and print sharing. Then on the Laptop goto Add printer> install a network printer and it should find it on the PC. Then all you do in say word etc is use the PC printer - yes, the PC needs to be on.
    3) Multiplayer / network games should play fine between your laptop and PC, just choose network TCP IP in game menu.
    4) Bit torrent should run fine with your set up, i have no experience with Azureus

    cheers

With torrents you may need to forward a port, 6881 I think. In which case your computer will need a fixed address as opposed to an assigned one (via DHCP).

  • it doesnt really matter what port is used does it? i use a different port and ive never encountered any probs.

Yeah, you can use a custom port, and it's actually recommended.

If you're behind NAT, you will need to have port forwarding set. It's in the Azureus user guide:
    http://azureus.sourceforge.net/doc/Azureus%20User%20Guide.htm

You may have UPnP enabled on your router, in which case it'll open the ports automatically hence you won't need to set port forwarding. I personally prefer to turn UPnP off though as it's potentially less stable, and there are still questions with regards to security.
