I make granola with oats, I use oats, pecan nuts, pumpkin seeds, chopped dried apricots, dried cranberries and sometimes raisens, and a tbsp or two of honey. Mix it all up and bake at about 150 C for 30 mins, stirring half way through. Its yummy, crunchy and I prefer it to muesli. I have it with milk or yogurt for breakfast.
Lots of mueslis have other things in, not just oats, whereas all my granola receipes are oats only.
  • I use oats in muffins. Here's one of the recipes....

    Apple and oat muffins

    1 cup plain flour
    3 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    3/4 cup oats
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 egg
1/4 cup oil (do not use olive oil)
    1/3 cup milk
2/3 cup stewed apples, apple sauce or apple pie filling (I use lidl applesauce)

Mix dry ingredients together. Mix all wet ingredients together seperately. Roughly combine the two mixes until it has just mixed and no more. The mix should be lumpy, it makes a better muffin. Pour mix into lined muffin tray and bake at 190oc or gas mark 5 for 20 mins or until risen and nicely browned. Allow to cool on rack before storing (if you have any left!!)

Makes approx 6 - 12 muffins depending on size of muffin tray used.

Scrummy warmed in the micro for breakfast :)
  • Granola is not the same as muesli. It contains many of the same ingredients but the difference is that it is mixed with syrup/sugar/honey and oil or melted butter/marge,and then it is baked.this makes the oats etc stick together and go crunchy. It is like those crunchy oat cereals that Jordan's and others make.

Here's my recipe, adapted from the More With Less cookbook which has lots of granola recipes. :)

Mix together in a big roasting tin
    4 cups rolled oats
    1 cup wheatgerm
    1 cup sunflower seeds
    1 cup coconut

    In a saucepan melt together
    1/2 cup of honey/maple syrup/golden syrup
    1/2 cup sunflower oil

Pour onto dry ingredients and mix well
Bake at 150c for 30-60 mins stirring frequently.don't let it get too brown.

When cool add any or all of the following
    raisins
    dried apricots
    sultanas
    dates

Nuts, such as pecans are often added, but I skip these because of dd's allergy(coconut is OK)

  • I'll post the basic muffin mix on the recipe thread. You can add anything you like to them, just as long as you mix all wet ingredients together seperate from the dry ones first. ;)

Isn't granola the US version of "muesli"? Mind you, they make the most fantastic Granola Bars  :D

If there is a difference, I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me, it would settle an ongoing argument once and for all :D:D:D

no, granola is more like jordans breakfast cereal ;)

  • I prefer the granola - I've had it in the states with yoghurt and its delicious, they sell it in salad bars as a sit down or takeway. I'll have to make some now! I can't afford another flight just yet!

i'm surprised i forgot to mention granola, though i don't make it as much anymore as we're flapjack fanatics

i grew up with granola, it was actually considered a bit of a hippy thing and not exactly cheap (think of health food store type costs) well, not when i was growing up as a kid... probably because it was not truly mainstream at the time.

i've never had it with yogurt but that sounds quite nice!

but i've always loved it, very nice indeed might have to make some today for old times sake ;)

  • Thanks for the Granola recipe Thriftlady!:j

I have always wondered how to make this, and as the OH brought home a huge box of oats from work (6KG) and i'm sick of porridge_pale_ , I shall give this a go. I know the kids will love it.
