I've only recently worn a corset, and as some of you'll know my wedding outfit is a corset and skirt. I'd say a definite YES! They shape your figure beautifully, and with a waist, and boobs (but in the right place now), it makes you feel so feminine. Mine is incredibly comfortable to wear, which surprised me actually, but the lady who made it says that's if it's not comfy, then it's not your correct size.

I can recommend you look at qualityalterations.co.uk. That's where I got mine from. There are prices, and a gallery of ones the lady has previously made. Worth a peek.

I have loads of wobbly bits, and I don't spill over, the corset is quite long, and just , well, fits. When you wear it , it's like everything is where is ought to be! hahah. Can you tell I like them?! A new convert!

    Best of luck!

  • Ahhh well I've usually gone for a size bigger than usual as the ones in my actual size dig in even more into my hips and make me all hips!! I don't understand how it all works!??! :o I have looked at Gok's range, but i really want something ivory if poss (im going all "traditional" for once in my life :) ) Also, you know you say go 2" less than usual in the waist area? Well for me I can't see how I could as I'm tiny in inches under the bust, several inches bigger round the waist and even more so at the hips!! Which is why I went for a made to measure wedding dress, as I'm size 8 top/size 10 bottoms - awkward when it comes to dresses!

it IS possible to have a tailored corset that can start at your bust and sit over your hips, it has to be 2'' smaller because its needs to fit right, the idea of the corset is to pull everything in, give shape and most of all ''support''.. you can get them for every size possible and since your of a small size yours wont cost as much.

what area do you live in? i could possibly search out somethin suitable for you..
if your willing to travel there are a few stores in scotland i would recommend and then there is one in london call '' fairy goth mother'' they have a website aswell, they do couture designs and such.. price all depends on what your really looking for.

make sure if u want a proper corset that it is a ''steel boned'' one, plastic boned ones are actually ''basques'' .. and can bend easily, they dont last very long.

I would agree with corsets being fab - I was a size 16 when I got married and had a custom made steel boned corset to wear under my dress and it was fabulous, worth every single penny. And not even remotely uncomfortable. The steel boning doesn't bend like the plastic does - when you sit down for a while in a plastic corset-top or basque, you'll probably notice that when you stand up, the bones have sort of bent in the middle so the bottom of the corset now sticks out. This doesn't happen with a good steel one.

I did have a little "underspill" lol, but my dress had an a-line skirt so it didn't matter in the slightest - and it was far less than I had from the typical bridal basques I tried, which had plastic boning and just bent. I couldn't get a strapless bra which actually fitted properly as I have a very large bust. The corset just made them look fab, and my waist tiny.

I've also worn a steel corset since with more fitted skirts, and just dealt with the slight underspill by wearing spanx too!

cyber in glasgow (near the barras i think), they mesure you and fit u up for one, you can even bring in your own fabric and they make it for you.
they also have thier own range of corsets and other clothing to.

hellfire, thier couture store has some nice corsets atm, last time i was in there i seen a very nice white/ivory corset, they sell bussle skirts and alsorts to.

cyber have the best prices and styles, but it all depends on your taste and of course ur budget!

  • I purchased a corset from Corsetry Couture about 2 months ago which is the best fitting corset I now own (I am a bit of a corset addict!). Its fully steel boned and is just beautiful on. Their website is:

    corsetrycouture .com

They do standard or custom sizes at very reasonable prices for high quality corsets. Thought I would recommend as I've paid 2-3 times as much on other corsets in the past that havent been as good, so definately worth a peek xx

I love corsets so i would always say yes, however, I have asked for a bi of extra boning in my bodice and a lace up back so it is similar to a corset. as long as they are well made you are ok, Metal boning is easily better than plastic.
I would say tho if you are wearing it all day make sure it is comfortable, I wear corsets to go out in and theyre fine as I spend most time dancing as opposed to sitting

Hi, I'm a corsetmaker based in Glasgow. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Firstly, a properly fitting corset shouldn't be uncomfortable. It may take a few wearings to break in if it's heavily boned. The bones should not dig in, and you shouldn't have problems with rolls unless it's too small or too short. Rolls at the back can be minimised by adjusting the height of the corset at the back (skinny girls get them too sometimes).

I'm afraid I'd almost always recommend a corset to be made to your measurements. It's such a closely fitted garment that off-the-rack is rarely a good fit.

Any size can have a corset to suit them. Curvier girls look great in corsets, in fact, as they have more flesh to redistribute, they often look best in them.

Bear in mind a corset will substantially alter your figure shape (not just your waistline) so you'll need your corset to wear before you have your dress fitted.

Think about the shape of your dress. An overbust corset sits differently at the bustline to modern clothes. An underbust corset with a nice bra might suit your dress better. Of course, if your dress is strapless then an overbust may be needed, but consult with your dressmaker/shop and your corsetmaker. You'll want to make sure the items compliment each other at the bust and at the back (a corset can't go very backless without compromising bust support).

Also, if your dress fabric is thin, the corset bones and edges may show through. So give this some thought too. Some very clingy dresses are better with smooth support underwear rather than a boned corset.

Lastly, a corset is a substantial, usually steel boned garment, closely fitted to your measurements, not a plastic boned bustier. Never skimp, cheap corsets won't last, will be uncomfortable and will not give you the best shape. I know this site is about money-saving, but in my opinion cheap corsets are money-wasting (as well as potentially damaging). Good value is the most important thing. It is possible to get a made-to measure corset for the same price as big name off-the-racks. But we are talking about upwards of £80.

I hope that helps a bit :) Please just ask if there's anything else you'd like to know.

    Hi
I am a size 24 and am a bridesmaid for my sister's wedding in Itally. I am expected to fit into a bridesmaids dress and am dreading it! I can't afford much but wonder if it is worth buying a corset for under the dress. Am I best off getting it taylor made or can I get away with a cheaper one from a shop? And where can I get one from? I live in aberdeen.

    Thanks
    Happy to be happy
