ACAS would have guidance as to what period of notice is 'assumed' in this situation, I believe.
I agree that there are all sorts of reasons you might find yourself in need of a reference in the future. I'd never leave on bad terms if I could avoid it!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I phoned ACAS and they said, 'Even if you have not signed a contract you knew what was in it so therefore you need to give a months notice, if you don't they might take you to a civil court and can claim for any money lost as a result of you not giving any notice'
So, looks like I'll give a months notice and ask if I can leave a week or early and see what they say.
They need me to train who ever will replace me, now I could make a good job of that or a bad one depending on what they say. The company has been not treating me well, I should of been given commission but was not paid as the company couldn't afford it.
So, I don't see why I should be loyal to them. I will give 2 weeks notice and see what happens.0 -
my oh wanted out of a job and didnt want to give two weeks notice..
he spoke to manager who said she would take his two week notice and from the next day he could have it as holiday so worked all round
a guy ii worked with at old job handed in months notice and they told him he could go at end of the day cos he wouldnt be putting the effort in and if he was unhappy ect ct..
