    I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

  • Sounds like more than one issue here:
    - If you upgraded to Vista, did you increase the physical memory to at least 1Gbytes and virtual memory as well? Vista is very memory hungary especially if you want to use some of the graphical features.
    - The defrag program should give you a report about the status of the disk, and if it requires the defrag to be done. I have had problems where it will not start at all, which is different than you. I feel it is more likely a lack of memory resources causing everying to slow down.

    Rather than mess around trying to bodge Vista to work on an underspecced machine, why not reinstall Windows XP?
