BG HomeCare - trying it on?

I've received a letter from British Gas HomeCare thanking me for my enquiry about renewing my servicing contract and attaching a direct debit mandate. I have not contacted them or asked for a quote, so that's fib A.
On the top of the direct debit mandate sheet is a section showing Agreement Details, giving "Total Annual Charge" of £284.25, and underneath that "Payment Amount Due £89.25" with absolutely no detail of what it relates to. As I have always paid by monthly direct debit I had no idea what this £89.25 was for.
So I phoned them, and after a lot of waffle it turns out it was a "mistake"! I find it hard to believe that a huge company like BG, with automated accounting and renewal processes, would make such a mistake, and can only assume they are hoping that some people will not bother to query it and will just pay up.
I took the name of the person I dealt with, and asked for written confirmation that I don't owe this amount. I will not be renewing the contract this year as it strikes me that £285 a year for one half-hour boiler service is extortionate. In future I will call out a local tradesman if I need any work, and for a service call.
Be careful out there folks.
