Macbook User Passwords

Hello,
I am very new to anything Apple, i've normally just used normal windows, however i decided to buy a brand new Apple Macbook last week and now i'm a little stuck with login username and passwords.
I would like to add a password to my macbook so when i log in i am required to enter a password, this is more to protect personal work related info on it. I have looked at the instructions and they are no help. I've logged on and had a look at the keychain, but i'm still no closer to figuring it out.
Any help would be greatly received.
