RBS have changed my card type without telling me

Sorry for the long post.....

Last week I went into my local RBS to get advice on a joint royalties gold account I have with them.

I had my partners (now ex) name added to my account years ago. After we seperated I was told by RBS that I could not remove his name or cancel the account without him authorising it also. I dont speak to him so that was impossible. It was my only current account so I continued using it (It's been about 3years since we split).

When I went into the branch last week they advised that I can close the account and could open a new royalties gold account and have everything transfered over. I was a bit annoyed that I had been mis-advised previously but I agreed to go ahead with the change over and signed all the paperwork. They processed everything on their computers but said that there had been a problem with their internal check and it would need to be reffered to their HO.

I was away for a few days and on returning home I have just recieved a letter thanking me for opening me new account and telling me that me new cashline plus card is on its way.

This may seem petty but I am really angry that when I went to the branch I was not told they would be replacing my highline card (maestro) with a cashline plus card (solo).

I have spoken to the branch this morning and I was told that there is nothing I can do and that once I have had the new account open for a few months I may be allowed to have my card upgraded.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and managed to get it resolved?

Any advise would be apreciated

M x

They haven't changed your card type because it's a completely different account. What you have done is opened a new account, expecting that they would automatically send you the same type of card that you had on the joint account. It seems that the checks demanded by head office have decided that they will only offer you a solo card. Unless they promised you a Maestro card I doubt that there's much you can do apart from run your account well for a few months and then ask to be upgraded.

OK maybe i didn't phrase the title very well.

I understand that it is a new account but i specifically asked if the new account would be the same as the old account and was told that the only difference would be the overdraft (I have £100 on the old account and had been told that due to having to get the application reffered I may not be given an overdraft).

I think what is annoying me most is that if I had been told about the change in card I wouldn't have bothered with the change in account.

AFAIK soon they are changing to Visa so you should get a Visa debit card then as a replacement

They system decision was clearly only to offer a CLP at the present time. However if certain criteria are met then the branch would be able to authorise a debit card, eg No excesses, salary mandated etc.

We have a natwest step account (they keep trying to get us to upgrade, but we are happy with a basic account and don't want to tempted into ever having and overdraft again). The card says SOLO on the front, but MAESTRO on the back and we have NEVER had it refused anywhere.

I believe there were issues a few years ago with some small retailers, but we have found no problems recently.
My understanding is that maestro and solo and switch are all the same now.

My friend has a Solo card with a Maestro at the back. One day, the shop processed the transaction as a Maestro one....

Looks like your card has two debit systems.

Solo is accpeted in a wide variety of places anyway these days. If you are not satisfied with the card type, open another bank account elsewhere.
