    Thanks all for your responses. I wonder whether this has changed over the years. My guess is that on average people are paying a larger proportion of their income in CT then they were 10 years ago - in other words, CT has risen faster than incomes.

    I don't think you can break it down against how much you earn, otherwise where is the incentive to work, I might as well sit at home all day watching re-runs of jeremy kyle and claiming benefits?

    Last year I paid more in charitable donations that I did in council tax.

    about 9% here, but we recently both got new jobs. Used to be about 12%...:)

    Am currently working - earning about £24000 pa with council tax bill of £973, so that's 4%. But am retiring later in the year and the new percentage will be 8.5% of pre-tax income.

    The thing is that with other things you have a choice about, for example, using less heating, buying cheaper food, etc, but with Council Tax the only thing you can do is move - which I have been wanting to do for some time.
