Phillips DVD-R

A friend of mine has sent me a disk for me to cap, on it is a recording of family for Christmas and she'd like pictures off it for scrapbooking.
It's written as a 'proper dvd' with a menu and Video_TS etc folders. VLC on my laptop refuses to play it (it crashes as soon as the player opens) and it crashes on my desktop (Vista = laptop and XP = desktop)
There's been no other problems with other disks like this (Verbatim through to cheap no branders) on either computer.
It'll play in WMP and 321 Media Player (I think that's the one, it comes with one of the codec packs I have), I'm up to date on all updates and codecs and patches etc.
... So does anyone know why it won't work and what I can do to rectify it?! Thanks
Thanks

philips are usually good disks...
could you try copying the disk to another brand yourself..though I'm not sure this would help..VLC is usually a good player for just about everything.
One worry I'd have is your comment " it comes with one of the codec packs I have", I hate codec packs, rather than litter my machine with 8 different codecs for 1 format, and 2 dozen for formats I'll never see, I just download the ones I need (currently, I think, just xvid and ogg...probably got ffdshow installed somwhere) Codec packs have caused me problems in the past, and I imagine they could be the root of your current problem.

Thanks

The Codec packs I have are the DIVX one and also the K-Lite one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Lite_Codec_Pack) as the MP4's I have didn't play without it.
VLC just crashes and won't open them and Nero gets to 94% copied before it dies.
I have managed to rip the folders onto my desktop and write them to a verbatim disk and it's working on VLC but it throws up an error at the start about not being able to show the menu and then it plays for 15 minutes then swaps keeps playing through so it's sort of a case of trial and error to find the bit you want - bt at least it's working
If anyone could shed any light on the originals I'd be glad though - thanks

Still the same problem today after full restarts and a gentle wipe with a cloth. There's no marks or anything on them.Homer: Don't you worry about Wikipedia. We'll change it when we get home.

Try with something like powerdvd?
and ditch the codec packs - they cause more problems than they solve0 -
Id suggest updating the firmware of the dvd drive:idea:0

If some apps can play it fine it's not a problem with firmware, I'd have thought.
VLC can be pretty flakey, tbh. If it'll play in Media Player Classic (123 player) or WMP then I'd definitely point my finger at VLC.
MPC can take screenshots, and can navigate DVD menus - why not just use it?They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
