Price Comparison By kwh - Stumped!

I work for a property management company and have been charged with finding alternative prices for gas for a communal heating system for a block of residential flats we manage in Liverpool.

At present we have a bespoke contract with Eon, which is proving difficult with the comparison sites because they want me to enter a named tariff to compare - which isn't possible!!

We are currently paying 2.534 kwh (which I suspect is fairly good) with the contract reviewable at the end of this month, and we need to know what others will offer before bargaining hard with Eon to keep it low.

Can anyone recommend a comparison site that will allow me to compare by price per kwh rather than tariff name? Perhaps a Commercial supply one since although the supply is for flats the fact that it's communal tends to change the way they categorise it.

Just put in any old tariff name and compare the cost for your typical consumption with how much you calculate you currently pay.

Even if the tariff is listed, everyone should still perform this calculation. The suggested savings should always be treated sceptically.

What is the primary use of the energy? If it is one for heating residential properties, then it should be a on a domestic tariff (which is usually a better deal than a businerss tariff). You would certianly get more protection under a domestic contract e.g. ability to disconnect.

As you are looking to possibly change supplier, this might be the ideal opportunity to get the bills on the correct type of tariff for the residents.

The price for your gas will depend upon your consumption and type of metering. If you are using over 73000 kWh / annum, most domestic contracts will not cover this and you will probably need a business contract. A business contract will also give you price security (though you may pay more at the moment as the market is (generally) falling.

So better to get a business contract that has no minimum lock-in period?

You will probably struggle to get a commercial contract without a tie in - especially if over 73000 kWh - I can only think of one and the rates are poor. If consumption is over 250 000 kWh then you have no chance.

Hi

Thank you all for your advice so far. At present they are consuming around 1,400,000 kWh per annum and as Energyman says we have to have this on a Business contract even though it's for communal residential use. I think this is also because the contract is with the Management Company rather than a named individual.

Eon are asking us to fix for a year at 2.517 per kWh. Sound fair? I'm going to do some ringing around but if anyone knows of well priced suppliers I'd be very grateful!

1400 000 kWh of gas is a serious amount of gas - you will need an industrial gas contract for that amount.
