Animal basic first aid

Last night my sister rang me in a terrible state because her dog was choking on a piece of hide bone - the ones that are knotted at both ends.Anyway luckily i know a vet nurse so i rang her and she told me what to do.The dog `s fine now, it dislodged and he brought it up.
This got me thinking i`m going to do a search for emergency first aid for animals for things like that happening because you only have minutes in that sort of situation , i have a dog and would`nt like it to happen to him.

I had a similar sort of thought a few days back, when mutt decided to try to try to swallow a ping pong ball and wouldn't open her mouth for my mother to get it out. Mum said she just kept thinking if the dog died how on earth was she going to carry her out of the woods and back to the car. (Practical sort, my mother!)

Having accident prone dogs (or maybe they have too much freedom in the woods and rivers to get into bother and have accidents :o) I always carry a small bandage along with my dog poo bags.

About 12 months ago Idiot Dog ripped a big hole in his chest wall and I had to use my jumper to hold him together until we got to the vets. He's fully recovered now BTW, but the bandage would have been so much easier to use.

You bring up a good point nuttywoman. Two of mine are LabXs and try to eat anything they come across whole - and sideways. We've not yet had a choking incident, but that's more by good luck than good management. :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.
  • Last weekend I attended a half-day Dog First Aid Course run by Animal Aiders (https://www.animalaiders.co.uk). It only cost £30, which I thought was quite good value. I went mainly coz I'm in the process of setting up my own dog walking business so thought it would be an handy extra string to my bow, but I got the impression most of the other people attending were just regular dog owners. Even if I never use it professionally, I think the stuff I learnt about wound management & bandaging will be invaluable considering the rate at which my 2 dogs (both greyhounds) seem to injure themselves! You also get a course booklet to take away afterwards to jog your memory.
