James I have no advice for you but am looking for your experience of astroturf. I love the idea of never having to cut the grass and just being able to hose the dog pee and poo off it. What is it like to have astroturf?

i have fitted astro turf to both of my previous houses gardens and will do for the house were moving into aswell. Not sure how well it would be for a dog but i'm sure i read when i was picking mine it is suitable for a animal.

its easily maintained and looks great all year round, previous garden was clay and when the children went on the grasss this sort of time of year it just churned up and took weeks to get better. With astroturf straight after its rained its fine to go out and play, no mud or mess although does cause burns if you fall over on it. I had some that if you added more kiln dried sand the grass would become harder or less and it was soft. i use to go to the extremes but i would jet wash the sand out once a year and then relay it all for the next season. I laid it on compacted soil then sand but wish i had laid it onto something it bit firmer as it wasnt totally flat but then i guess it looked more real!

I presume you are talking about a large balcony the size of a patio? You will need to watch the weight of what you put down but what about wooden decking? I think vinyl tiles will wash off when the weather gets underneath them.

Thanks Stolt, what kind of price did you pay if you don't mind me asking.
