Take a scene out of a dvd

I have a short scene I want to take from a home dvd and convert into an avi. I've tried VirtualDub but there was a sync problem, I think because of a missing keyframe? I seem to only be able to load the one vob into VDub at one time so can't figure that out.
Anyone know of an way to overcome this or have another free way to grab scenes in sync? TIA.
