Outlook Express problem

When I boot up my pc, I find something has changed the name of my mail server to a number, namely 173.0.0.3.
This prevents me getting mail. :(

I can change it back to the proper name click apply and its ok while the pc is left on. If I reboot, the name is changed again. :-/

I have tried deleting the account and then setting up again, but something recognises part of the info I put in for my e-mail account, even if I change the account name.
I have 6 mail accounts and this is the only 1 it does it on.
I have tried making another account the default account as well.

I have mccafee antivirus and firewall software and also adaware, both these are upto date and have run recently with no problems found.
Used scan disk, had a clean up uneccessary files etc and run defrag too. still same problem. :-/

I haven't a clue whats causing this, but its really annoying me now, having to change my server name evrytime I boot up. >:(

all help most appreciated. :)

  • Adaware doesn't find everything - I use SpyBot as well as Adaware - sometimes they both find problems that the other has missed.

This really does sound like spyware or virus action, so it may be worth checking out something like SpyBot, and one of the free online virus checking programs. See the 'security' thread at the top of this page for details.

Try disabling email scanning in McAfee temporarily and see if it still happens

I have had similar problems in the past ... it sounds to me like you have run some sort of proxy server type software (and this could include virus scanning software) such that all e-mail is downloaded through this proxy server.

If the proxy server isn't running, the mail won't be downloaded and you'll get an error.

As the previous poster said, try disabling your e-mail virus scanning (temporarily!) and if that fails, think about what software you might have installed which is proxy server/virus scanning like and remove it. THEN remove the server info and try again.

    Good luck!

(This used to drive me seriously mad too).

Norton AV (email scanning) is a pet hate of mine for this very reason.

think the others have said it ( in a more tech way) sounds like it might be a spamkiller ( I have it on McAfee) and every new email address I add always gets routed via an address like that first
( it seemed to slow things up, so I have gone into spamkiller options and deleted the accounts, so now go direct into my inbox)
