Webcam - what features do I look for ?

I want to buy a webcam to use with MSN. What features should I look for ? Is there a difference in resolution ? What about coping with different light levels ? I saw one which said it had a movement detector and could be used to trigger an email for intruders. I presume some are actuated and follow you if you move ? Although really I might be happy with a basic one but want a good picture for around £25 ? Any advice, thanks

Yes, there are resolution differences. You should also be looking for a built-in or bundled microphone or headset if you intend video-conferencing. Most cameras perform OK in a well-lit room; it is when light levels drop that problems arise with some. What kind of environment will the camera be used in? With MSN, the camera settings for brightness/contrast/colour stauration etc can be adjusted from within the program.
With a budget of £25 you are not going to get any zoom/pan/tilt functions AFAIK. I would recommend visiting ebuyer.co.uk and reading the user reviews from the products that take your fancy - Logitech and Creative labs products might be a good place to start.0 -
Thanks for reply. I will be using in well lit room, and I am happy to pay more if its necessary.
I have speakers and a microphone (built into the monitor) from my HP pavilion desktop on XP, so will they work without the need for a headset ? or will MSN expect to be getting voice through the USB webcam ?0 -
Your normal mic/speaker combination will be fine.0
