ruined lawn

we have a large trampoline in our garden however under the trampoline the once well groomed grass is now mud, we haven't got room to do trampoline rotation in order for the grass to restablish but as it is quite big it is not really an option. We have put down grass seed which does grow but then gradually dies and cutting it is a bit of a pain. Any suggestions (cheap would be good) Obvously the area around the trampoline needs to be fairly soft just incase they bounce off! Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

got the same problems with pools etc.. we have come to the conclusion that unless we ban these things to have a pristine garden and stop our daughter having fun then we will have to live with it untill she grows out of all this.. we getting her a trampoline in the summer as a moving house pressie ok so a bribe lol so expecting the garden to look even worse.. cant think of anything you can do to help with it other than taking it down when not using it but if like my daughter will be used all yr long..

ROSPA have lots of info, this links into one of their pages, mentioning bark, which is enviromentally friendly, and doesn't need 'cutting' but does need topping up!!

    http://www.rospa.com/playsafety/info/04_looseimpact.htm

Only problem is they seem to recommend a fairly deep bed, but that wouldn't need to be underneath the trampoline, presumably only the unintended 'bounce' landings. Until I looked at this sight I didn't realise that there were different barks with different bounce factors!

For high shade areas in gardens you can get special grass mixes sold specifically for shady areas, we've used these successfully in the past, but don't think they'd cope with being constantly under a trampoline.
  • March edition of Gardeners world has tips for putting your lawn in tip top condition. Might be a useful read in the local library.

Difficult to tell what's going wrong with your grass seed. Is the area of ground where you're sewing it compacted or water logged? Sounds like you get off to a good start and then it dies. Try again March/april time for seed. The new grass should just about have time to establish itself before the sun comes out.

If the area's in the shade I'd definitely recommend lawn seed for a shady area.

Alternatively you could always go to B&Q and just by a roll of turf and replace the dead grass.

Unfortunately all plants need sun light even grass - so consider planting some shade tolerant plants just under the trampoline such as hostas - which will hide the inner mess in the middle - and/or cover the inner with bark and semi-perm membrane as suggested

would much prefer a nice lawn but was outnumbered by two kids and a husband who thought it would be fun however the kids love it. Husband said he would help me move it round the garden to prevent grass dying but never did and its just so heavy to move alone . Thought about some of that rubber matting like playground have but think it is quite expensive or astro turf at least its green but don't know how much it would cost trampoline is 13ft diameter any ideas? otherwise and cheapest option would be some bark.

Hello again I would prefer the trampoline as well. Why not do as others have mentioned keep it in one place get some MIPEX which is a weed surppressing membrane that alows water to seep through (no puddles) and put bark down Wyevale does 5 bags for about £10-£15 you colud also rest the legs on slabs etc.

Enjoy the time with trampoline as kids who enjoy geting exercise are more likley to enjoy exercise in adulthood.

before you put the membrane down get some leaf mould to put under it and let the worms condition the soil so it is ready to plant grass seed - when your hubby grows up ...
