If you live near a B&M store (where the defunct Woolworths used to be) I noticed in two stores that had Orzo in (Hinckley, Leics and Bulwell, Nott'm). It was priced at 49p for a 400g packet. At first, I was slightly sceptical about going in and finding any decent bargains, but I was wrong when there were lots of branded goods that were near their sell-by-dates - Amoy oriental sauces, Hellman's Mayo, organic jarred beans, pate, Lucozade cans etc., I came out and bought quite a few bits. It's well worth trying...:j

Orzo is the Italian word for barley. BUT is also the word used for the small rice shaped wheat pasta. There was a chef on t.v. recently using this.

    Some waitrose do stock it.

So we need to buy it now as it will probably triple in price soon!:rotfl:
  • In London, lots of Turkish, Polish and Middle Eastern food shops seem to sell it. It's great mixed into cooked mince or you can use it to make a type of risotto - or orzotto, in this case. Happy hunting!

You may find some in your local Aldi as it was a special line a few weeks ago.

Orzo (from Latin hordeum, sometimes called Italian rice) is Italian and means "barley," but in common usage in the United States, orzo is understood to mean rice-shaped pasta, slightly smaller than a pine nut. It is frequently used in soups. Despite its rice shape, orzo is not made out of rice but of hard wheat semolina. It is also known as risone or kritharaki.

I saw some yesterday in my local Asda
  • Publix in Florida sell it (along with most of the US Supermarkets)... I've no helpful uk location, but we often bring orzo back from the US! Not money saving, but handy if you are over there!
