To take really good pics with a Digital SLR - You need proper lenses.

...and in many cases - They cost Several hundred pounds.

So there is no point in really buying one - Unless your really serious about it and have the money to spend hundreds and hundreds on lenses.
  • The D40 takes better pictures than a compact digital. If you are not a pro and only want to take good pics without spending a small fortune on equipment then it is great. It is fast, has plenty of choices for various adjustments and is easy to use. My pictures are comparable to those of a friend who has an expensive DSLR. I would be the first one to admit the lenses are not the best, but then I would be the first one to say I don't want to spend hundreds more on something that does not get used more than about once a week at the moment.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

The person holding the camera has far more importance.

An entry level DSLR and kit lens is very capable of taking high quality pictures in the right hands.
  • Hi
Good luck with deciding what camera to get - too many choices for me to make a decision.
I have found this site "quite useful" it does not cover all models or all shops, but the "lowest price history" is quite enlightening.

To a degree that is true, but the lense makes a massive and i mean massive difference, i have 1 lens that blows the socks off the cheaper lens. The camera's are nearly the same throughout the ranges, just things like fps and iso which is different, obviously if you have money to burn get a 1D mkIII from canon, they are the mutts :).

On a budget get a sony, built in Image Stabilization and cheap lenses, my brother has one of these and takes pretty good pictures with it.

I went to a camera shop this afternoon and had a good luck finally decided on the Sony A350.

Bought it from Currys they price matched Argos so it ended up costing £406 and I live near Currys so it was very convenient.

Thank you to everyone who has posted it was not an easy decision but you were very helpful.

Glad to hear you got one - sounds a good deal too.

We've got a Canon EOS 300D which is absolutely brilliant even though its a few years old.

To the poster who said there is no point without multiple lenses, I totally disagree. the 18-55mm lens which most DSLRs is excellent, and has a reasonable zoom capapbility (nearer 90mm if you are comparing to film based SLRs). We also got one longer lens 85-200mm for longer distance work - but bought a Sigma, which is a well-respected brand, excellent quality wise, and only cost £100. hardly 100s and 100s, and the quality of pics is in a different league to compacts.

Apart from their bulk, I can't see why anyone would choose a digital that isn't an SLR.

    Good luck with your pictures!

I'm currently looking to replace my old and tired Fuji Finepix.

Nikon D60 is looking favourite. Gets great reviews:

Just make sure you get the 'VR' lense. Some places sell it looking cheap until you realise it's not the VR lense (EG Argos).

There's currently a £30 cashback offer from Nikon.

I was looking at them in Jessops on Saturday and I overheard the salesman talking to a couple of guys. He said new camera models tend to be released this time of year (for the Summer) so I guess the inference was hold out a couple of weeks because you may get the D60 (or whichever one you fancy) cheaper if it's to be superceeded.

Was in the EXACT same boat and got the D60- best decision ever made, great pics. If your budget is tight get the D40 though- still a great camera. Go see Flickr shot to help decide!
