DSLR Camera

Can anyone help me please?
I'm looking to buy a DSLR camera to use for taking good family photos, I currently have a Sony T20 compact camera.
I was looking at perhaps a Sony A350 which the cheapest I can find are £409 in Argos or Sony A700 which are dearer at £700ish with a lens although I'm not sure it is much better as I don't really understand about shutter speeds etc..
As I'm making an investment in a good camera I don't mind spending a few hundred but don't really want to spend a £1,000 on one.
I wasn't quite sure were to post this but any help or advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks:beer:

DSLR prices have shot up in the last 6 months, the best place to look is on-line.

I'd look at either the
Nikon D40 / D60
Canon EOS 1000D
any DSLR will provide better photos than a compact

The Sony alpha 350 offers image stabilisation in the body of the camera, therefore making the cost of lenses cheaper. Also it is Minolta fit so there are a lot of lens possibilities out there.
The live view is excellent and it is 14mp so pound for pound very good value
oh and it takes very good pictures.
Cannon and Nikon are good but unless you already have lenses to fit them the Sony is the better value IMHO0 -
I have recently bought the Canon 1000D and found it a great beginners SLR, I have also invested in a couple of lenses - couldn't stretch to the canon lenses and went for some sigma lenses and they have been great and not that expensive.

I'm currently looking to replace my old and tired Fuji Finepix.
Nikon D60 is looking favourite. Gets great reviews:

Just make sure you get the 'VR' lense. Some places sell it looking cheap until you realise it's not the VR lense (EG Argos).
There's currently a £30 cashback offer from Nikon.
I was looking at them in Jessops on Saturday and I overheard the salesman talking to a couple of guys. He said new camera models tend to be released this time of year (for the Summer) so I guess the inference was hold out a couple of weeks because you may get the D60 (or whichever one you fancy) cheaper if it's to be superceeded.0 -
Found some cheap ones here if you're travelling Dixons tax free

Panasonic G1 seems quite cheap at dixons £3740

I have a Nikon D40, took it on safari with me and got some wonderful shots!
It is very easy to use, totally menu driven. You can use it is a normal DSLR, or just switch to auto and it sorts out all the settings for you. It is very fast and the focusing is great. I would highly recommend it.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Can't go wrong at that price. Also check out Flickr for photo samples. You can search by camera. And image stabilisation in the body of the camera as well.0 -
Go to a specialist photography site and ask advice there.
Steves digicams is great and I can recommend them whereas certain sites tend to belittle people with anything but the best most expensive equipment (as I own and run a digital photography site with about 6000 active members thats been running since 2001 I know a little about them)
PS My own site has not been mentioned and I do not "Pimp" so will not post about it on this site out of respect for "Money saving expert"0 -

Another vote for the Nikon D40 here. Got mine last month via Amazon where the package included a 18-55mm lens for under £250.
