Hello!
Just spilt vimto on the zoom usb adsl modem (model 5610) that came with supanet broadband. It no longer seems to work - it powers up the modem but nothing else (I am on dial up at the mo - rubbish!).
Anyway, I was wondering what my best options are for getting a new modem - I use a laptop that is not wireless enabled, has usb 1.1 and an ethernet port. What are people's opinions on the best I should go for - usb, ethernet or wireless - I really don't have a clue.
If anyone knows of any good deals that would be great too.
Cheers

HO sj,
A router would be the best in the long run. Should come with a ethernet cable-- that you could use to connect to the laptop/PC
A linksys ADSL router is a good idea.0 -
Cheers, would this sort of thing work? (I really don't know!)

If you think it is broken, then you won't lose anything by taking the case off and washing the insides with warm clean water (preferably distilled or de-ionised). Then allow to dry carefully above a warm radiator (NOT hot!) for many hours, or by somesuch other method. Put it all back together again, and plug in. Stand well clear and turn it on. It may work again.
But if it's had acid fizzy pop on it for some time, that may have done for it...

Thanks John.
I tried that, but still no luck - maybe I will try again tomorrow just incase it has not all dried out yet. (I tried it earlier today, not after you suggestion - only saying that so you don't think I let it dry for about 2 mins!)
One hundredth post - woo hoo!0 -
My suggestion was just in case you hadn't thought of it - but the mixture of acid and sugar can be fatal to sensitive electronics...

one of these may be better than the dlink, as they have a built-in firewall

Just looked up some reviews on the cheaper netgear (not too bothered about the wireless - unless someone can persuade me otherwise!) and it has a mix of positive and negative - does anybody know about this model, or about alternatives?
I am learning a bit more as I go along!0 -

I haven't used this particular model, but have used others in the range, without any problems. Whatever you decide to get, it is always a good idea to check the manufacturers website for a firmware update as soon as you get it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
HI SJ,
Go wireless in the first place-- any of these will do:

you could always switch off the wireless if you dont need it --- a few pounds spent today will be useful if you buy a laptop or a second PC later
