What type of Kitchen Worktops?

We're moving soon and are in the process of doing up the kitchen.
I've chosen cream gloss doors and want to choose the worktops now. I'm use to laminate, I find them easy to clean. My mum has high gloss laminate and it's horrible. I'll have four kids under 8 who will be homeschooled so spending a lot of time with me in the kitchen (studying, baking, cooking etc) so I want easy maintenance.
I like the wood effect laminate but dh likes granite. I've seen the mottled effect ones in B&Q which is a mixture of matt and gloss. How easy are these to clean? I use microfibre cloths religiously but don't want to be cleaning finger prints.
My current kitchen is white gloss with white laminate and really easy to keep clean strangely.
So laminate or granite?

Laminate (non gloss) for a pratical working kitchen. Its good value and you are not going to distraught when some one puts a hot pan down on it or chops somthing with out a board.0
