OP I think that you are being very unfair. For years people have neglected UK resorts and years ago they used to prepare by getting extra staff in etc, but after years & years of sending those staff home because everyone had flown off to Spain/Portugal/Turkey for their holidays, you can't really expect them to be psychic & know that they will be a bumper amount of people there this year.

Also in a place where trains very rarely get used (nearly eveyone travels by car) I would imagine that on a normal weekend one coach is probably more than enough.

Having spent the day out in St Ives, Cornwall. I wonder if the industry is geared up ready for the return of the good old British holiday?

    6. The seagulls were viscious and need to be culled. They were swooping and stealing ice creams and pasties from peoples hands. Terrified children ran for cover. Not a good start to the season.

The reason that the seagulls nick stuff out of peoples hands is because over the years helpful tourists have been feeding them some of their food whilst eating ;) and they have learnt that getting food inland is far easier than catching fish.

It's a bit like the pigeons in Trafalgar Square, toursits think they're great & keep feeding them, whilst locals just wish that the visitors would wise up & stop feeding them.

I do believe there is a cull where the eggs are painted with stuff that prevent them from hatching, but gulls seem to breed like rabbits & the local councils are fighting a losing battle.

As for shutting early so that they can prepare for the evening trade, I expect OP that if they hadn't have done this thenyou would've been moaning about the lack of service & the wait for your evening meal ;) Also there are a lot of cafes in St Ives so I'm sure you could've found somewhare that was open to get your cream tea.

Yes I know that these people are there to provide a service and if you visit them during the school holidays you will find they run very smoothly, but maybe if they hadn't been ignored for the past few years then our coastal towns would be used to being busy on an ad hoc basis.

Sadly the British tourist industry has brought it upon itself. Speaking for Cornwall, It's a fantastic place, with some great swimming beaches and great surfing beaches, harbours, walks and so on. But we have priced ourselves out of the market somewhat.
Isles of scilly for example £109 return fare for a 20 mile flight. How much is it to Spain?
Hotel in St Ives £95 per room per night How much is it in Europe?
Ice cream cone £1.60 each last weekend.
I am sure this is the same all over. It's not cheap to holiday in this country and if you add, fuels, weather and busy roads, you can understand why people want to go elsewhere.

They say with the recession that people will travel in this country. I know it's still March but if yesterday was anything to go by, this country is not going to make it!

It was a warm sunny day and people were heading to the beaches. So were we. Thought we would take the train as it's cheap enough and makes a change.

    1. Train we wanted was cancelled (no reason given) Had to wait 45 minutes until the next one
    2. Branch line train was one carriage only. It was as full as the Tube in rush hour. (You would think that some one with a brain might say....."Hmmmmm it's a nice sunny day I think people might go to the beach, lets put an extra coach or 2 on". No stupid GWR)
    3. Despite the very busy town and sun. Many shops shut at 1pm (half day)
    4. The woman in the chip shop was rude and were not geaed up for the potential numbers of customers. (Again no forward thinking)
    5. I wanted a coffee in the sun on an outside table at 3pm. The cafe shut so it could get ready for the evening diners. What? They could have made 100's on potential afternoon cream teas
    6. The seagulls were viscious and need to be culled. They were swooping and stealing ice creams and pasties from peoples hands. Terrified children ran for cover. Not a good start to the season.

Apart from that It was a beautiful day and worth coming down this way. But I hope we get out act together before Easter !

    agreed!

there's nothing wrong with the great british resorts.
i was in weston super mare last year on business and taking a walk along the seafront in the early evening.
a bloke and his misses in their mid fifties were walking towards me eating ice creams.
the bloke turns to his misses and hands her his ice cream. he walks to the pier and proceeds to "drain the main vein" in full view of everyone against a wall.
he finishes, gets his ice cream back from his misses and they carry on walking as though this happened every day.

you don't get that in marbella...

I totally agree with your opening statement the British Tourism industry is a shambles from the top down. We try to let a holiday house in Lincolnshire but are so messed around by so many official agencies it makes it a nightmare. Visit Britain, Enjoy England, East Midlands Tourism, Visit Lincolnshire, West Lindsey tourism. All these want to be involved, take money but none of them do much apart from their infighting. Simple example, we can use the on line booking with Visit Lincolnshire OR Visit Britain but not with both as they use different systems and refuse to talk to each other! We are thinking of giving up!

I think this is a bist harsh - have you any idea how much 'an extra coach or 2' of rolling stock actually costs ? And therefore how many additional tickets they would need to be sure of selling on a regular basis to even break even on the cost.

Don't care to be honest. They got a bunch sitting there in Penzance 6 miles away. They always have 2-3 on in the summer. I just don't like being squashed in a train like cattle
