How would I go about making a largely text based website searchable? By this I mean returning articles based on search strings entered via key words within the site.
The site is already indexed by various search engines and the pages contain meta data, however I would like users to have the additional functionality of searching for content within the site. Any pointers or recommendations of good recourses would be fantastic.

Easy, just embed the Google "Search This Site" feature on your website. See here for instructions - it even gives you a tool to generate the HTML code at the end of the page.

Is there another way of doing this without having an advert for Google on the site?2 heads are better than 1….unless they are on the same body!0 -

If you sign up for a Google Adsense account, you can customize a site search much better.
E.g Have Google Search written on the button instead of having a logo
You can customize the results page to some degree
And if anyone clicks on the sponsored links on the results page, you get some money. (but not much)0
