Problem needs solving.

I have justa quired a 'puter for my soninlaw and it has had progs & files removed - some of them incorrectly.

when it boots up I am getting a message telling me that it cant find a device file that may be required to run windows or a windows application.
It suggests that the program it in Sys Ini or the windows registry.

It then stops loading and waits for a key press - very annoying.

The file it is looking for is c:\afterdrk\adw.30.386.

Can anyone tell me if this is important. puter seems O.K. without it.

And how do I remove the offending prog.

I have disabled the sys.ini reference but to no avail therefore I guess I need to look in the registry but don't know what to look for or where to look.

ALSO how do I remove files that belong to progs that have simply been binned and not uninstalled properly?

Anyone?

Ps it's windows 98 and it has only about 24 Mg Ram + 4 gig H/D

  • Try

    start, run, msconfig

    or

    sysedit

    or

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

    or regedit

if the directory was deleted manually, then you may be able to undelete it from the recycle bin, and then uninstall it properly using control panel, add remove programs

Did he have a game or screen saver called after dark on it?

you have deleted the device=c:\afterdrk\adw30.386 reference in system.ini?

  • Win98 support is going to be dropped by Microsoft soon (couple of months), so I'd run windowsupdate on it to get it patched while you can..
