We have just installed Avast and everytime I try to do a scan it gets a third of the way through and then crashes. The computer has been crashing for a while and that is why we installed Avast. We think it may be crashing due to our BT hub. Is there anything that I can do?

It just closes down, in the middle of surfing the web or when scanning0

take the side of the PC and blow out any dust inside and clear the air intakes while its turned off
also locate the Ram
and unplug and reseat them
do the same with any PCI/Graphics cards
you will need a cross head screwdriverEx forum ambassador

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

So it's nothing to do with avast, is it then. It sounds like a hardware problem, tbh.We have just installed Avast and everytime I try to do a scan it gets a third of the way through and then crashes. The computer has been crashing for a while and that is why we installed Avast.
Er... why?We think it may be crashing due to our BT hub.
You can try reseating your ram and cards as Browntoa suggests but if you're unhappy doing that and you, or someone you know, has access to another PC with internet acess it might be worth downloading the ISO image of Ultimate Boot CD, (UBCD), and writing it onto a CD for testing purposes. Is there anything that I can do?
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html
Set your PC to boot from the CD drive and boot from the UBCD CD. I'd suggest choosing one of the memtest programs such as memtest86+ and leave it running. If memtest, for example, won't run continously without crashing then your PC has a hardware fault which is nothing to do with windows, viruses or anything else because you haven't even loaded windows.
The tests are detailed at the UBCD website.
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
For obvious reasons do NOT start fiddling with the hard disk formatting stuff, otherwise you'll lose your data.
If you have a hardware fault you need to sort it out as otherwise you're wasting your time.0 -

Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
UPDATE and PERFORM COMPLETE SCAN
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
(Forget the 'hardware' that people are talking about until the software part is sorted):idea:0 -
How long after you turn it on in the morning does it start crashing? If it's a while, and if it 's crashing completely randomly (which it seems to be), and if it tends to do it more while doing something intensive (like a full system scan in Avast, or gaming) I reckon it's overheating that's causing your crashes, probably your processor.
Get a clean paintbrush and brush out all your airvents, especially near where the power lead is attached. Open your case (turn PC off first, by the way!) and give the CPU fan and any other fans on the motherboard a really good dust out. Make sure the PC is sitting in an area where air can get to it easily.0
