Turbo diesel cars
Many modern cars are now sporting Turbo diesel engines in order to drive up power output and reduce emissions.
If you have one of these, have you realised the cost of repair should the turbo fail?
Also,do you realise the importance of keeping a check on oil level and also replacing the oil and filter regularly with good quality correct spec oil?
Does anyone know which vehicles are more prone to turbo failure?
I was discussing same with my local garage mechanic,a man who has been in business for many years. He seemed to feel that BMW seem a bit prone to failure and told me a particularly horrific and very expensive tale about an X5.

Was it under warranty?
If not how much ££??
Do you know the cause of failure?0 -
BMW turbo's don't last long. But that's down to poor maintenence and not cleaning/replacing the breathers out.
VAG stuff with the 1.9 tdi 90/110 engine (circa 2001) suffered turbo problems.
As for the importance of checking oil and using the correct spec is just common sense, really... Though I do believe it should be part of the driving test...0 -
I have had a couple of VW 2 litre Golfs with Turbo, first one used a lot of oil, new one seems to not be using so much...I check it regularly, when I put fuel in mainly.0

The important thing with the Turbo is after a long hot run to leave it running at tickover for a minute or two to allow the bearings to cool down.0

had three TD cars now and always done the tickover thing for 30-60 seconds. never had an ounce of trouble - touch wood! The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
I have two vehicles with turbos, a petrol Audi car that has two and a diesel Iveco van that has one.
The car is at 196k miles and the van is at 160k and neither have had any trouble. Both get the recommended oil every 6k miles and are allowed to cool after a hard run.
Get one that hasn’t been maintained (oil changes are critically important) and you will have £££££ troubles0 -
this thread has got me worried now.
I have a vw passat estate 1.9tdi (130) which has done 100k miles in 4 years. i do check and top up oil as necessary but oil only ever gets changed at a service which is approx every 20k miles.
Car does 60 mile to work and occaisional 300-400 mile trips and ive never done the cooling after a long run mentioned above
am i heading for trouble?0 -
No. As long as you don't rag the !!!! off it as you complete your journey, you'll be fine. Driving gently for the last half a mile before you pull up does the same thing as idling to cool the turbo.
The time to start worrying is when you notice excessive oil use, or white/blue smoke from the exhaust.0 -
The cooling down thing only really appies to Turbo petrol models.
Make sure with yer Passat that you do yer timing belt a bit earlier than stated.0
