Megabus

The first time I used them, it was an actual double-decker bus as their couch had broken down

Wasn't a problem though, the driver said if anyone needed the toilet just to tell him and he'd stop at next services. We had a stop mid-way through the journey anyway just in case.0 -
Megatrain from Edinburgh goes to to Carlisle and Oxenholme but I want to get off at Penrith. Could I buy a megabus/train ticket for the Edinburgh to Carlisle bit and then a Virgin trains single for Carlisle to Penrith or would I actually have to get off at Carlisle and catch the next train to Penrith (buying a single for that bit). Not sure if megatrain timetabled trains stop at Penrith as I don't think all the West Coast mainline trains stop there? I actually want to go to Buttermere via Keswick, so if there is a local bus to either of those palces from Carlisle that could work too? Other option would be get off at Oxenholme get branch line train to Windermere then bus to Keswick (and on to Buttermere)?
By the way when I have used Megabus in Scotland (Edinburgh to Aviemore/Inverness) it has just been the normal Scottish citylink coach (but booked via megabus so much cheaper)"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

My sister uses them Oxford to London and you get to ride on the Oxford Tube Coach for £1 to £4 each way (book early as possible) against £13 single or £16-£20 rtn paying the Tube.
I've used them from Sheffield to London and they were speedy.0 -

Yes you can get a megatrain ticket to Carlisle and a normal ticket on - even on the same train.
What you can't do is get a megatrain ticket to Oxenholme and get off at Penrith - if as you say the train stops there. In reality you might well get away with it but it's not 'legal'0 -
Used them a few times, no probs

I used megabus all the time in summer for day trips to Brighton. But they've withdrawn that route.

Yes, that's what I thought. The outbound journey from Edinburgh doesn't stop at Penrith anyway so you have to get off at Carlisle and wait 40 minutes for the next train. However a return from Carlisle to Penrith (15 minute journey) costs £11 which is the same price as the whole of the rest of the journey (Edinburgh to Carlisle return on megatrain is £6 outbound + £5 coming back). So getting the Carlisle -> Penrith return portion doubles the cost of the journey! There is a bus from Carlisle to Keswick but it leaves Carlisle 7 minutes before the train arrives. The next bus is 4 hours later (there are only 4 per day on that route whereas there is an hourly service to Keswick from Penrith).
Oh the joys of public transport, no wonder those who can drive do."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
