Do you work public sector or private.
Why wasn't this picked up before? I work public sector and we clock in/out and have a monthly report to line manager giving our balances etc.
Do you get any reports or does your line manager. Can you claim ignorance of not knowing your time balance?

Yes, I agree that it is serious. However, as others have said, why wasn't it picked up before?
What will be will be. All billy can do now is work on how best to explain the situation (honesty is vital), get some good advice, and start looking at what to do if the worst comes to the worst. billy, you need to not panic, and you need to speak to CAB and ACAS as soon as you can. People will help. You must have access to the company's policies and procedures! I've PM'd you.
Check your rights with ACAS.
They should send you a copy of the policies etc along with a letter informing you of this investigation.
You should also have some representation at this meeting Staff side (colleague), or union rep(not any family)
Could your family GP supply any written verification of your exceptional circumstances or the situation at home?

You can call up & ask them to send you a copy of the company disciplinary procedure.
By the fact you have been dismissed, they are obviously taking this as a serious matter. How many employees are in the company? How many clock in & out like you?0 -
My advice would be if you are public sector to join a union today. They will take you on. GMB or Unison are main public sector unions.
Ask for a schedule of 12 months of clocking in/out times including lunch break. Assume you clock in/out for lunch. Did you take a short lunch and make up time there?
Did you take work home with you?

I would argue that the company have let you down as much as they will make out that you have let them down.
There should be a mechanism for ensuring that this doesn't occur and if it does, that it is sorted quickly and any support required by the employee is offered.
Unless as you previously said there has been obvious attempts to deliberately de-fraud the system by asking others to clock in and out!

But if this is a first offence, and there are legitimate circumstances and you co-operate fully with the investigation it's not often that a first offence is viewed as a sackable offence! Unless major harm, deliberate attempts to defraud and or disruption to the company, employees or clients has occured.
You need to fight your corner.
You may well find that company policies are on their website!

My advice would be if you are public sector to join a union today. They will take you on. GMB or Unison are main public sector unions.
They can't represent you until you have been a member for 4 weeks but they may still offer you some general advice

I have worked there for 10 years and have had no problems up until now.
Up until 12 months ago my time-keeping was very good.0 -
One thing I dont understand in all of this: If you clock in and out every day, it would surely, show up your timekeeping record and your company would pay you accordingly, and not let this drag on for so long. You should have said something at the time, but on the flipside, why did your manager pay you full pay then he surely could see your clocking in cards show differently?They have the internet on computers now?! - Homer Simpson
