    To make things worse, most "benefits" are not taxable.  You need to "gross up" the amount of benefits to come to an equivalent gross wage less tax and NIC.  This point always seems to be over-looked when the do-gooders witter on about benefit levels compared with average earnings.  From recent newspaper articles about large families receiving "benefits" totalling £30,000 or more - that must equate to £40Kto £50K of gross earnings  -far beyond the reach of most normal working couples!
