This once happened to us,We told them that he wanted to do a weeks work to see if it suited him,Also that he had to work a week in hand which was all true,

We recieved a bill approx a year after to pay the overpayment back,We wrote and said we could not pay it back all at once they let us pay it back at £10.00 a fortnight.

You could telephone them tell them you will not be able to attend as you have found employment and inform who you need to to cancel benefits.

If you are renting a council house also there was a deal where you do not have to pay rent for 4 weeks if you have been claiming for a certain time period,Not sure if it still happens but worth looking into.

Don't worry to much just let them know tommorrow that you can not attend cancel all benefits inquire about extra help like working tax credit and help with rent.

Good luck keep us updated as to what you do and how it goes.GOOD LUCK

There is definitely no 2 week run on of Income Support anymore, you were no longer entitled to IS the day you began your new job. You will be eligible to a 4 week run on of housing and council tax benefits starting from 20th Feb. You will also be eligible for a job grant of £250.

IS will need written notification of the date you started work so they can implement the job grant and housing and council tax benefits run on.

You will have been overpaid since the last date you were entitled to IS was 19th Feb. Don't worry about this too much, as a previous poster stated, it will most probably be a long time before you hear anything (if at all) about this and you won't have to pay it all back at once if you can't afford it.

I would be honest about the date and inform them as soon as possible, you can ring them to let them know and follow up with a letter. This will let them suspend your claim so you're not overpaid any further. If you are claiming tax credits and have told them of your change in circumstances, they will inform IS of this, including the date your job commenced so it's best to be honest and let IS know yourself first.

Hope this helps and best of luck with the new job!

Hmmm, thats not what the single parent advisor told me....... she said you get to keep the first 2 weeks as most companies dont pay you til the end of the second week. I must find out about this!!

I signed off Income support 2 weeks ago, and was advised by my lone parent adviser that the £250 job grant was to cover me till I received my first pay packet (4 week payments  )

Ask your employer about an advance of pay. If a decent employer, they may give you a cash advance against yr pay, which would be taken off yr 1st salary.
  • Thank You Very Much.
    Waddle you do eh?
  • And don't forget, if u r claiming housing and council tax benefit, to tell the Local Authority yourself. It's your responsibility not the DWP. Although they will tell them anyway, but you need to tell the LA so you don't incur overpayments there.

Yes, you should be honest with the DWP.

But never, ever, expect them to be honest with you!
