Protectionism row flares as Renault brings production back to France

Renault and Peugeot, both running out of cash, were given billions in low-cost guarantees and loans provided they kept French plants open and saved as many jobs as possible

French president Nicolas Sarkozy was today at the centre of a fresh row over protectionism when Renault said it would create 400 jobs at a plant near Paris by "repatriating" Clio production from Slovenia.

Argh this makes me so angry! Why doesn't the EU take stronger action with this sort of nonsense?

  • Doesn't surprise me frankly. Several european countries interpret the rules as they wish to for their own advantage. What does surprise me is that so many people in Britain are surprised when this happens.

Except that the rescue of the GREAT BRITISH banking system was done with the permission of the EU Commission and in accordance with international law, while the repatriation of "French" Jobs is in contravention of the French agreement with the EU Commission and is, de facto, illegal and in contravention of world trade agreements.

I think this kind of thing is fairly inevitable given that new car sales are through the floor and the French work-force are fairly vociferous about job cuts, employment rights etc. The Eastern bloc countries are going to have a tough time of it in the next couple of years as investment pulls out.

This is how our government should look after our own union members as well.

Still doesn't make it right! The car companies should be forced to pay the money back

It's so unfair. I am going to set fire to a sheeple if this carries on.
