Normally via Peterborough. It's slower but a lot cheaper.
Buy tickets separately as well. Birmingham-Peterborough followed by Peterborough-Stevenage (buy 'WAGN only' for that leg) will offer more discounts than a combined ticket. If you're headed for Letchworth or Ashwell then change at Hitchin; most WAGN trains from Peterborough stop there.
There's also a National Express coach that does Birmingham-Stevenage.
    Can I help?

    cheers!

I'm not too bothered if it's a little slower, cheapers the best! As it will be an expensive weekend.

21st in B'ham on the friday then off to b/f's 21st the saturday! Hoping to plan his as a surprise!

    hi

cheapest i've been able to find myself is with wgn, typging in b'ham and lecthworth and getting £10.

    This is two changes.

National rails' website gives me £10 and that involves going in to london - argh!

That's a good deal via London. It is normally faster than the "cross country trip". You don't really have to go "in". You go to Euston (which looks like New Street anyway), turn left and walk half a mile to Kings Cross.
