Credit crunch fallout

I went to pick up my Friday prescription from Morrisons today (Jacobs Creek brut). The memsahib had warned me of some increases but I had not been prepared for this. The price had risen by over 50% in a matter of weeks! Presumably this is due sterling devaluation. No pain relief on the income side either (zero pay rise again this year). I found a bottle of Chateau Acetone for £4.50 so the evening was not a disaster. The whole episode however has left me shaken. I have kept a stiff upper lip throughout the credit crunch but there are limits. Are we to be priced out of essentials?

Last time I purchased a bottle of wine was in November 2005.
I daresay the prices have risen a tad since then!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I thought in true MSE style one would be producing their own brand of vino:rotfl:0 -
I think the retailers are profiteering.
First it was crop failure
Then fuel increases
now sterling devaluation.
Yep they have all played a part, but price of wheat has fallen from its peak, as has oil.
So sterling has fallen 20%, big deal that does not mean that the selling price increase by that much. A bottle of plonk selling at £4 probably cost the retailer less than £2, so 20% of £2 is 40p not a £1.
Despite the fail in the £ wine in France is still much cheaper than here, even though you take the full hit of currency devaluation
example 3 litre box of red falling down lotion in Tesco is £13.49
5 Litres of the same stuff in Auchan is €9.00 that was £7.20 last year and £8.80 this year[strike]Debt @ LBM 04/07 £14,804[/strike]01/08 [strike]£10,472[/strike]now debt free:j

Thats what I was thinking. Also, in most supermarkets, if you buy 6 bottles, you save 5%, so it certainly pays to drink more.
What we do is buy in bulk when the shops have offers.0 -

That is what it was like in Zimbabwe, perhaps it is merely the side effect of quantitive easing. lol0

Macaque, are you referring to the bubbly stuff? Or the ordinary JC wine? Costco do their own delicious brand of champagne, if you live anywhere near such a place. Done several taste tests (hic) and it comes out very well indeed.

Nah, in Zimbabwe if they got it down to 50% inflation a week, that would be a major policy achievement.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
