Credit card blocked my payment.

Options
I tried to pay for flights today with my credit card and NatWest blocked the payment. I got confirmation of the booking before NatWest rang me to question the payment.
Eventually I received an email from the airline asking me to ring an 0870 number to sort this out or I wont get the tickets. I rang it over and over but no-one replied. I gave up after 4.00pm when the airline ticket office closed. Now I have to wait till monday to sort it out.
I'm really annoyed NatWest have done this without contacting me first.
I told them I was going to go to singapore later on in the year and might buy something electrical, I didnt want this happening again. They said they cant do anything about it. If it gets refused I have to ring up NatWest from singapore.

anyone else had problems like this ?

Natwest are trying to protect you and make sure that your card has not got into the wrong hands. I know it's inconvenient, but it is far more of a pain if your details have been stolen. Whilst you will be covered in the event of any loss so long as you've done nothing silly with your plastic, long term it is the customers that lose out, as they have to build this into the cost for you

So many glitches, so little time...
  • If you've told them the dates you will be away and the countries you are visiting, then there shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure they'll be happy you're using their commission-charging card abroad!!!! Get a Nationwide CC before you go, never had any problem using it abroad

That may be true, but NatWest have called me on the phone not 5 mins after I paid for the flights. They could have called me first before cancelling the tickets.
I will have to wait till monday to sort this mess out now, as the travel company are closed.
If the ticket prices rise in that time I dont suppose NatWest will stump up the difference.

As I see it they have not cancelled the tickets only put the transaction on hold to enable them to contact you to see if the transaction is genuine. It is not Nat West's fault that you have not been able to get through to the airline to confirm the details although I'm sure that once you do so everything will be sorted out for you.

Indeed. It's the airline's fault - poor service.
  • Had a similar problem with Morgan Stanley. I am the main card holder, and my wife has the second card. She tried to book two flights to Greece, but the BA website refused to accept the card (said something along the lines of card issuer cannot authorise payment - contact them), so I tried my card and there was no problem.

Contacted Morgan Stanley and was told it was queried as it was an unusual spending pattern. They also advised that I should give them a heads up before going abroad as they could block some more "unusual" spending patterns arising from this (which would have been the last thing I need, if I used their card abroad). But they did say its more likely the online purchases that get queried.

  • I authorised a payment on my card recently to go on a 14 nights cruise to Zanzibar incorporating a stay on Kenya Beach. The holiday company contacted me to say that my transaction was declined - the 14 nights holiday only came to £599 per person!! I could easily have lost my tickets through msroyalstar.com but they held off my seats and didn't charge me a credit card fee either. The issuer wanted to know whether any foreign currency was being purchased in the transaction and although msroyalstar confirmed it was only a package I was booking - they still declined the transacation because they could'nt contact me on my home telephone number - I was at work!! Paid on a different credit card in the end.
