Wow, gallifreyangirl, I admire your resolve! Nobody could accuse you of suffering from faint-heartedness or indecisiveness!

Sorry to hear of the problem with the first one.

It sounds as though your new one may be less than 12 months old and you could thus extend its warranty to the full three years if you buy and register Applecare for it before that option expires on the first anniversary of the Mac's initial purchase.

I always do this, myself, with any Mac that I purchase second-hand and/or on eBay. You never know quite what it might have been subjected to in the past but if it passes muster with me when I open it up and check it out it will probably also pass muster with Apple if I should ever need to invoke any warranty.

Don't buy the Applecare from Apple, though!

Get it on eBay, but always purchase one from a British seller, sealed in a box - never from abroad and never from anyone offering to "spare you the cost of shipping, by simply emailing you the Enrolment Number instead." Yeah, right; together with a free coupon to buy a Stupid Tree in a bowl of precious panda poo.

Use PayPal, open it up when it arrives and register it immediately by telephone with Applecare who will link it to the Serial # of your Mac. That way, you will confirm that it's genuine before the PayPal cover on the eBay purchase expires.

Apple charges some £275 for Applecare on a ProBook but I paid £108 for my last one on eBay and my companion nailed hers for £100 on a Buy-it-Now. :money:

Thanks for letting us all know what happened and do tell us how the new one is!

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

    Hmm.

What you really need to do is establish the provenance of this ProBook and also the date and place of its original sale.

Apple will be able to tell you that from its Serial # - it needs to keep that information on record because Apple is liable automatically for the first twelve months of its warranty.

Do an "About this Mac" (from the drop-down menu beneath the Apple logo, top left corner of the screen) and then click on the "More info" button that this displays. That will give you its Serial #.

Armed with that, call Applecare on 0870 876 0753 and explain the position.

Alternatively, take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple dealer.

Either way, explain the position, ask what its Applecare situation is and they will check their records and tell you. I've always found them very friendly and helpful (they're carefully chosen to be).

The fact that it may have started out life in Germany won't be a problem - it's inside the European Union and so is Britain.

You can only extend the warranty to three years if the Mac is currently less than a year old.

So, don't buy this Applecare item on eBay (which looks fine) until you've established from Apple whether your Mac is eligible to use it.

(It's probably sold already, now you've posted a link to it on MSE on a Sunday afternoon! But there will always be others.)

The German keyboard won't be a problem, either - there are always plenty of "British English" keyboards available from ProBooks that have been dropped and broken. So, don't pay too much for one. Install it yourself: it's pretty simple: you don't need to pay anyone.

In the meantime, you can just use a regular USB or Bluetooth keyboard with it if you don't like the German one it's got.
