Its not always , it could be the cable between the screen and the motherboard that has either become faulty , loose or come partially disconnected.
It could just mean taking the machine apart and reseating the connector at one or both ends.0 -
Are there any instructions to help me do this. I am au fait with desktops and can build them but have never been inside a laptop before

November 2007 ! On boot up there are multi coloured parallel lines and I am unable to use it....

Do the lines appear when the system is going into the OS, or do you get any messages before the lines appear. If you get any messages, then this is possibly the BIOS, which is good. The lines may mean a wrong setting in refresh rate. But check if you can get into the BIOS, by pressing the relevant keyboard key at boot up0
