Cancelling a Credit Card Without The Card

Options
My girlfriend has 2 credit cards (Capital One and Llyods) that she hasn't used for over a year and doesn't plan to use again.
There has been a statement from each card posted to her showing zero balance which is the reason I found out they were still active. Given she has destroyed both cards and doesn't plan to use them again.
Can anyone advise how to word the letter to go about cancelling these cards. (Tried a search but just keeping getting blank pages) I don't see the point of having these cards on her file when they won't be used again.
She has no debts to make it worthwhile trying for 0% deals.

Thanks for any advice.

Just ring them up and cancel them.. they will action it for you immediately they can trace her card from her dob, address etc.

and if you recently recieved a statement it should have an account number on it that they can also use to trace it.

Then they will send you a final statement confirming account closed.

Just put the account number off the statement at the top as a reference.

State you wish to close the account.

In the body of the text slot in "I confirm I have destroyed all cards/cheques relating to this account and there are no outstanding transactions to be processed."

Make sure its signed and that should do it.

You can also add, "Please confirm in writing this has been actioned"

  • A lot of card companies have been sending out statements this last couple of months advising about the chip and pin situation.
I think some might be worried that if no-one remembers their pin then their profits will suffer!
  • I have done exactly has Ben advised and it worked fine.

I second the bit about asking for written for confirmation. I would then get a copy of your (or her) credit report (Experian or whoever) just to double check.
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.
  • I would deffo call them.

Cheapskate I am, I know that Cap One have a freephone number to call - saving you the price of a stamp, plus they can put you through to the correct department to close the account straightaway

I cancelled my egg card by sending them an email and asked if they required further confirmation in the form of a letter. They were happy with the email - always ask for confirmation they have closed the a/c.

    Ditto above.
  • Cheers for all the responses.
I was under the impression that the cut up card should be sent with the cancellation latter.
I'll draft a letter and get my girlfriend to sign it. Only way they will get closed down.
    Thanks again.

Most companies seem to ask for the card to be returned but when my OH cancelled his MBNA card he simply put in the letter that the card had already been cut up and disposed off. He got a letter back a week later confirming his account had been closed.
